Colonial Costumes

It was in the 1600s that colonialists from Europe started arriving in the United States. During the early colonialist era. men wore linen clothing with cloaks and knitted stockings while the women wore bright colored long dresses that dropped down to their ankles. Children, on the other hand, wore wool or linen clothing in hues of blue, grey, red or green. Even though these colonial costumes have been out of fashion centuries ago, this is still a popular attire among costume parties, plays, historical reenactments, etc. Weve seen a lot of these colonial costumes in various movies and television shows. Often times, our familiarity with colonial costumes rests on the images of men wearing coats, vests, knickers, jabot, wrist cuffs, socks, boot spats, breeches, shoe buckles and hats. These were actually the attire of colonialists in the 1700s, the time Wwhen they were starting to severe ties with the British. During this era, of theen wore the three-cornered hats and white wigs.
